Lost Orson Welles films to be shown in New York, Nov. 19-22

Updated on November 17:  Oja Kodar will not attend the MoMA screening of footage from The Other Side of the Wind and The Dreamers on November 20. According to a museum spokeswoman, “Ms. Kodar had originally been confirmed to co-present this program, but unfortunately she is unable to make the trip to New York and will not be present to introduce the Welles program on the 20th, so Stefan Dröessler will do the intro solo.”

The Museum of Modern Art in New York City will screen four evenings of unfinished Orson Welles movies from the collection of the Munich Film Museum.

Among the rarities to be shown at the 13th annual MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation are the work print of The Deep (1969); test footage for  The Dreamers (1984); The Other Side of the Wind workprint materials (1975); a recent reconstruction of The Merchant of Venice (1969); and a reconstruction of the preview version of Journey into Fear (1943), directed by Norman Foster under Welles’s supervision.

The MoMa showing of The Merchant of Venice marks its U.S. premiere. The long lost made-for-TV film debuted at the Venice Film Festival  on Sept. 1.

Stefan Drössler, director of the Munich Film Museum, will host the screenings entitled The Unknown Orson Welles. He will be joined by Oja Kodar, Welles’ companion and frequent co-star in the unfinished projects, on Nov. 20 before the showings of The Dreamers and The Other Side of the Wind footage.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Thursday, November 19, 6:30 p.m. The Merchant of Venice (1969), King Lear pitch reel (1985) and  film clips documenting Welles’s theatrical adaptations of Shakespeare.  Program length, 120 min.
  • Friday, November 20, 6:30 p.m. – Scenes from The Other Side of the Wind (1976) and The Dreamers (1982) and  trailers for The Deep (1969) and  F for Fake (1973). Program length,  Program length, 100 min.
  • Saturday, November 21, 6:15 p.m.  –  Journey into Fear, a reconstruction of the preview version.  Program length81 min.
  • Sunday, November 22, 6 p.m.The Deep with scenes from the workprints presented in chronological order with voiceover by Drössler. Program length, 115 min.

The13th annual MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation runs Nov. 4 through 25.  MoMa is located at 11 West 53 Street.
