Maddeningly, there is still no domestic Blu-ray of The Magnificent Ambersons or Mr. Arkadin, but a third such release of director Orson Welles’ post World War II thriller The Stranger is on the way.
On August 29, Olive Films will release The Stranger on Blu-ray and DVD with a list price $19.99 and $13.99 respectively.
Olive Films previously did a stellar job with its release of Macbeth in a bare bones and later deluxe package.
Released by International Pictures in 1946, The Stranger has Welles cast as a Nazi war criminal hiding out in a sleepy Connecticut town. It co-stars Loretta Young as his bride and Edward G. Robinson as the man tracking him down.
A public domain title, it has previously been released on Blu-ray by MGM Home Video (2011) and Kino Lorber (2013) to mixed reviews.
According to Olive Films, its release has a 1:33 aspect ratio and English closed captioning with audio commentary by Nitrate Diva blogger Nora Fiore and am essay, The Stranger: Murderers Among Us, by Jennifer Lynde Barker, author of The Aesthetics of Antifascist Film: Radical Projection.
No details were provided on the transfer.
