A full year before the 100th anniversary of Orson Welles’ birth, the Toronto International Film Festival Cinematheque has something special planned for fans of the late director.

TIFF Cinematheque will feature a special screening of the recently rediscovered silent footage of Too Much Johnson, as part of a mini-retrospective entitled Orson Welles: Lost & Found on May 9-13, 2014. Also on the bill are Welles classics Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons and the digitally restored Othello. The retrospective begins May 9 with a showing of Carol Reed’s The Third Man with Welles cast as Harry Lime.

Caroline Yeager of George Eastman House, will provide a live commentary for Too Much Johnson, accompanied by William O’Meara on piano on May 10. Myron S. Falk’s home movie footage of Welles directing actors Joseph Cotten and Ruth Ford on the set of Too Much Johnson will also be shown.

The silent “Too Much Johnson” footage was intended for use in a 1938 stage production by the Mercury Theatre. Believed lost for decades, it was discovered in an Italian warehouse and restored by George Eastman House. The footage was first shown in Italy and the United States in October 2013.
