IT: Chapter 2, the followup to most successful horror movie of all time, arrives in theaters today.
Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and Bill Hader are the stars, but Wellesians will want to look for a cameo by Peter Bogdanovich.
Bogdanovich, who played director Brooks Otterlake in The Other Side of the Wind, again plays a movie director, this time named Peter. He is wearing a VISTOW (Volunteers in Service to Orson Welles) pin in his scene.
VISTOW was the nickname used by Frank Marshall and others during the filming of The Other Side of the Wind in the 1970s. At the Telluride Film Festival in 2018, crew member Lou Race handed out VISTOW pins to his colleagues.
IT: Chapter 2 director Andy Muschietti is a self-professed fan of Bogdanovich and sought him out.
“It’s just a one-day shoot,” Bogdanovich told Film Journal International before filming last fall. “The director and I are friendly: Andy Muschietti. He’s a very sweet guy. He wrote it for me. He said, ‘I want you in the picture,’ so he wrote me a scene.”
Muschietti, who cites Bogdanovich’s Paper Moon as one of his favorite movies, told USA Today he considers Bogdanovich a good friend. “He can sit down for three hours and talk about Orson Welles and (Alfred) Hitchcock.”
