Neil Verma has been curating a series of articles about Orson Welles’ radio works for the website Sounding Out entitled “From Mercury to Mars: Orson Welles on Radio after 75 Years.”
“From Mercury to Mars” is a joint venture with the Antenna media blog at the University of Wisconsin, and will continue into 2014.
The first installment was Tom McEnaney’s “Hello America” article on Welles and Latin America in 1942 and the second was Nora Patterson writing on the infamous “The War of the Worlds” broadcast of October 30, 1938.
The most recent installment is Debra Rae Cohen’s perspective on “Dracula.” The July 11, 1938 broadcast of “Dracula” was the debut of the The Mercury Theatre on the Air on the Columbia Broadcasting System. It featured performances by Welles, George Coulouris, Agnes Moorehead and Ray Collins – all of whom would be seen on-screen in “Citizen Kane” three years later.
Audio for all three radio programs can be heard on Wellesnet’s popular radio page. Read about Welles’ radio work and other weekly articles of interest at Sounding Out.
