To mark the 70th anniversary of Carol Reed’s classic The Third Man, StudioCanal has reissued in Europe its limited edition four-disc set from 2015.
The first two discs include the 4K restoration of the Graham Greene-penned movie, starring Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles, along with several featurettes on PAL format DVD.
The restored film and same featurettes are repeated on the third disc, a Region 2 Blu-ray.
The bonus features on the first three discs include: Audio commentary, Famous Fan, Restoring the Third Man, interview and zither performance by Cornelia Mayer, interview with Cotten (audio), interview with Greene (audio), Cotten’s alternative opening narration (audio), Shadowing The Third Man, Dangerous Edge, Third Man on Radio (audio), and the trailer.
Completing the StudioCanal set is a soundtrack CD of Anton Karas’ iconic zither score performed by Gertrud Huber.
The four-disc set, which also includes artwork and a booklet, can be ordered online at amazon.co.uk/Third-Man-Limited-Collectors-Blu-ray/dp/B00X7RHUFQ
The set is priced at £25, or about US $31.
Set in post World War II Vienna, The Third Man stars Cotten as Holly Martins, a writer of pulp Westerns, who arrives penniless as a guest of his childhood chum Harry Lime (Welles), only to find him dead.
Considered by many to be Britain’s finest film, the movie was released in September 1949 in the UK. It had its U.S. premiere five months later.
