Orson Welles’ 1947 film noir classic The Lady From Shanghai is the inspiration for an upcoming Australian stage production by chanteuse Nikki Nouveau, which will be part of the 2015 Melbourne Fringe Festival.
Set amid the opium dens and nightclubs of 1940s San Francisco, this new production offers a fusion of live singing, cabaret and physical theater, with a soundtrack provided by the likes of Bauhaus, The Cure and Florence & The Machine – as well as the score from the original Columbia Pictures release.
Nouveau’s debut cabaret production Burlesque Assassin enjoyed a sell-out season at the Adelaide Fringe Festival in 2011 and was nominated by The Sydney Morning Herald for “Most Thrilling Theatrical Event” at the Sydney Fringe Festival in 2010. Her past stage credits include the Edinburgh Fringe sell-out Bordello Blues. (See video below).
The Lady From Shanghai will be staged in Melbourne on October 2-3.
Tickets, priced between $21 and $25, are available at melbournefringe.com.au
