The East Village’s latest bar is the kind of watering hole where would-be Holly Martins can order up a Harry Lime while zither music plays in their head.
Located at 116 Avenue C near 7th Street in the Big Apple, The Third Man takes its name from the classic 1949 Carol Reed thriller starring Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten.
The Third Man boasts cocktails and appetizers from Austrian-native chefs Eduard Frauneder and Wolfgang Ban of Seäsonal Restaurant & Weinbar and Edi & the Wolf tavern.
Guests enter through a tunnel passageway lined with exposed wooden beams, opening into one of two seating areas and a full, wrap-around bar. Designed by Philip Haemmerle and Justine Parsons, the space features emerald green leather banquettes, distressed mirrors and glass bar shelving along exposed brick walls.
Cocktails include the Chesterfield with gin, fresh ginger juice, fresh lime juice, house-made grenadine and tonic water; the Harry Lime with mezcal, chartreuse, maraschino, and fresh lime topped with sparkling wine; and the Triest with myrtle berry liqueur, fernet and five-spice mulled cider.
