‘Third Man’ 4K UHD coming from StudioCanal

Update: StudioCanal confirmed to blu-ray.com that The Third Man will be released in Europe on 4K UHD in fall 2024.

______________

StudioCanal is slated to release Carol Reed’s post-war classic The Third Man on 4K UHD in September.

Dawn of the Discs is reporting the European release will be a limited edition digipack, which will include a Blu-ray and booklet.

While the Blu-ray may be encoded for European players, 4K Ultra HD discs are region free. There has been speculation that the StudioCanal release might mean a U.S. based label like the Criterion Collection will issue it domestically, but there have been no such announcements.

Written by Graham Greene, The Third Man stars Joseph Cotten as  Holly Martins, an American writer of Westerns, who arrives in post-war Vienna to visit his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles). On arrival, Martins learns that his friend has been killed in a street accident. Further, military police chief Major Calloway (Trevor Howard)  informs him that Lime was a black marketer wanted by the police.  Alida Valli and Bernard Lee co-star.

The film was honored with an Academy Award, British Film Academy Award and the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
