Shortly before his death at age 70, Orson Welles recorded what would be his final big screen performance – the voice of the robotic planet Unicron for the animated Transformers: The Movie.
Shout! Factory, in collaboration with Hasbro Studios, will release Transformers: The Movie – 30th Anniversary Edition on September 16. It is being remastered, with a full-range of new bonus content and collectible steel book packaging.
Details on the DVD and Blu-ray releases are expected to be announced at ComicCon in San Diego on July 21-24.
In addition to Welles, the animated motion picture boasted the vocal talents of Leonard Nimoy, Judd Nelson, Eric Idle, Robert Stack, Casey Kasem, Lionel Stander and Scatman Crothers.
Shout! Factory describes the plot:
“The year is 2005… For millennia, the heroic Autobots, led by Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen), have been at war with the evil Megatron (Frank Welker) and his Decepticons over control of their home planet of Cybertron. However, an even greater threat – Unicron (Orson Welles, Citizen Kane), a colossal transforming planet that devours everything in its path – is heading right for Cybertron. The only hope is the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. Will the Autobots be able to save themselves and their home world in time? An all-star cast, including Judd Nelson (The Breakfast Club), Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek), Eric Idle (the Monty Python films) and Robert Stack (The Untouchables), brings this inimitable, explosively entertaining Autobot adventure to life.”
The Blu-ray set carries a suggested $29.93 list price, while the DVD is priced at $14.93.
