‘W for Welles’ film festival set for Rome

Casa del Cinema in Rome will mark the 40th anniversary of the death of Orson Welles this year with a series of films under the umbrella, W for Welles.

The Fondazione Cinema per Roma, which organizes the annual Rome Film Fest, also manages Casa del Cinema. The W for Welles series will run there from April 1 through April 30.

The filmmaker died on October 10, 1985 at the age of 70. His widow was Italian aristocrat Paola di Gerfalco, the contessa di Gerfalco, who appeared in films, including Mr. Arkadin, under the professional name Paola Mori.

In a statement announcing the month-long series, the theater said: “Forty years after his death, the Casa del Cinema will celebrate one of the most important filmmakers in the history of the seventh art and one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, Orson Welles, with the W for Welles festival. Eight masterpieces are coming, selected from his extraordinary filmography, which saw him in the dual role of director and actor. An itinerary in the astonishing and bumpy artistic career of a pure genius who directed, in his films, legendary figures such as Marlene Dietrich, Charlton Heston, Rita Hayworth and Jeanne Moreau.”
