Director Bharat Nalluri (The Man Who Invented Christmas) is set to helm We Interrupt This Program, which looks back at the making of the famed The War of the Worlds radio broadcast.
According to Deadline, Sean Sorensen’s script explores two dramas unfolding on the night of October 30, 1938. The most well-known is the infamous radio broadcast, where the specter of invading aliens spooked some listeners, but more chaotic was the stormy relationship between broadcast producer John Houseman and director-star Orson Welles.
The drama will be financed by Echo Lake Entertainment (Truth, The Skin I Live In).
Echo Lake’s Doug Mankoff and Andy Spaulding are producing with Sorensen.
The making of The War of the Worlds has inspired two TV productions: Studio One: The Night America Trembled in 1957 and The Night That Panicked America. an ABC movie written by Nicholas Meyer (Time After Time, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan).
Public reaction to The War of the Worlds broadcast was explored in the 2017 film Brave New Jersey, written by Michael Dowling and directed by Jody Lambert.
