I don't think Ambersons is nearly as high-profile of a movie that would get any sort of anniversary release by WB. That's reserved more for the likes of Kane, Casablanca, Ben-Hur, King Kong, etc. Ambersons is nowhere near as popular as those films. I still feel there's a good chance that it gets released by Criterion (as I alluded to in another thread). A whole bunch of WB titles all went OOP around the same time, and most of those (e.g. Blow-up, The Asphalt Jungle, Cat People, etc.) ended up being released by Criterion. And I don't believe Criterion does anniversary releases.

Ambersons was one the top ten films of all time in the poll taken by Sight & Sound in 1972 & 1982 but now it lost it's status to other films the critics would rather voted for. I guess the film has no zombies, car crashes, or super heroes to offer to today's audiences and the studios would rather release on Blu-ray the Terminator films in a dozen different versions.

Yes, true, Ambersons has been considered (and still is by some) among the greatest films of all time. However, I think that reputation is primarily driven by film critics, historians, and scholars. That's not to say that there aren't regular folks who like or love the film (it's my own personal favorite of Welles' and among my top 3 all-time favorites, period), but I don't think there's a large mainstream fan base for the movie like there is for, say, The Wizard of Oz, The Godfather or Ghostbusters. I think "Anniversary Editions" are aimed at those types of large fan bases.

I feel similarly, Ed.

For me, it's more a favorite than KANE.
