Orson on George Orwell's Blacklist - among others!!
Interesting list (Alexander Cockburn describes it as a "snitch list"), submitted when Orwell had only a few months left. Besides Chaplin, there's Michael Redgrave, Welles's Burgomil Trebitsch in MR. ARKADIN. And besides John Steinbeck and George Bernard Shaw, whose HEARTBREAK HOUSE Welles produced as part of the Mercury Theater's renowned first season, there is also Cecil Day-Lewis, whose SMILER WITH THE KNIFE novel Welles tried to make into a movie in Hollywood, and Arthur Calder-Marshall, author of THE WAY TO SANTIAGO, which Welles also wrote a screenplay for that was also rejected by RKO.
Arthur Calder-Marshall, interestingly enough, was the grandfather of actor Tom Burke, who played Orson Welles in MANK three years ago. Cecil Day-Lewis was the father of Daniel Day-Lewis.

He certainly never met Orson or Katherine Hepburn.
I wonder if Michel Redgrave (associated with the left-wing Unity Theatre company in the 30s along with Alfie Bass and others) had to prove his loyalty by appearing in that 1956 1984 film as Eddie Albert previously did in the 1953 live TV person. David Niven (1) did a U.S. radio version and Vincent Price flew to Australian via Pan-Am to do likewise for a radio broadcast.
Redgrave also appeared in the CIA adaptation of THE QUIET AMERICAN (1958) which trashed Graham Greene and probably ensured Joseph Manciewicz's return to Hollywood.
