The Trial 4K UHD Criterion
On September 19th Criterion will release on 4K The Trial with some nice extras. Have the StudioCanal release and was very disappointed with it.
New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack.
One 4K UHD disc of the film and one Blu-ray with the film and special features.
New audio commentary featuring film historian Joseph McBride.
Filming “The Trial,” a 1981 documentary about the film’s production.
Archival interviews with Welles, actor Jeanne Moreau, and director of photography Edmond Richard.
Trailer.
English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
PLUS: An essay by author Jonathan Lethem.

Re: The Trial 4K UHD Criterion
So great that Filming The Trial finally gets a proper release. Pity that the previously released deleted scene has been omitted, though.

Re: The Trial 4K UHD Criterion
I hope Criterion will release it with better blacks and detail. The StudioCanal release looked dull and to my eyes too dark in certain scenes.

Do we know if this will have the deleted scene as a bonus feature?

The Criterion release will not have the deleted scene so i guess you will need the StudioCanal disc to see it.DexyMan wrote: Sat Jul 01, 2023 1:59 am Do we know if this will have the deleted scene as a bonus feature?

Re: The Trial 4K UHD Criterion
Is that confirmed or just seems to be true since it isn't listed among the bonus features? Is there some kind of rights issue that the deleted scene is tied up in?

Yes, I believe on the French releases it was given subtitles based on the screenplay but I could be wrong about that detail.

While we wait for the Criterion release, Watch TCM is currently streaming the Studio Canal version (in HD with French opening titles).
I can't remember whether I've seen this transfer before. But I watched about 30 minutes of this last night, and the print and transfer are terrific.

Re: The Trial 4K UHD Criterion
I think The Trial is one of Orson Welles best films. It's great to see it restored to it's former glory. I thought the new trailer was very good but I still like Welles original trailer the best. It's a pity they didn't dub in the dialogue for the deleted computer technician scene. Over all I thought the studio canal Blu Ray was very good. The only negative things I have to say about it are I thought the dialogue in a few scenes was still a little out of sync and the Blu Ray definitely could have done with more extras. I have been hearing good things about the Criterion Blu Ray that's coming out soon. For years it was hard to find Orson Welles films on DVD. Now it great to see that most of them are available in good quality on DVD and Blu Ray.

Will receive the Criterion release in a few days and will do a a/b comparison to the UK 4K disc from last year that was too dark in certain scenes losing some detail and kinda of a disappointment to me.

Re: The Trial 4K UHD Criterion
Thank you for this review, Ray. I have the film on the old DVD series introduced by tony Curtis. The new version looks inviting so much so that I may end my last semester in this infamous institution by running a Welles class 40 years after he left us and io years during his 50th anniversary ignored by "The Big Mediocre Film Festival" on this campus. Numbers may be low but I might be spared some of the Hitchcock first papers I'm grading that makes the process injurious to one's mental health!
