Cole,
True, the seedier aspects of TOE would fit nicely in a David Lynch film, especially Uncle Joe's bug-eyed corpse. When I mentioned THE TRIAL I was thinking in terms of the ambiguous and labyrynthian transitions between reality and dream states, like in MULHOLLAND DRIVE and LOST HIGHWAY.

As far as this French infatuation with Jerry Lewis goes, even if I read that book I still probably wouldn't get it. Obnoxious A-holes aren't that funny to me, but to each his own.

Mteal: I’m glad you specified which Lynch films remind you of THE TRIAL. I might have been quicker to agree with your opinion, but the films you mention happen to be the two Lynch films I still need to see. And if they really are similar to THE TRIAL, my favorite Welles film, I’ll have to make a special point of trying to see them.

DRIVE is the better of the two, but it's interesting how both titles evoke 'road' imagery. You can find some very interesting interpretations of MD at www.deja.com by searching 'alt.movies.david-lynch'. Of course, you'll probably want to see the film first.
