I have a question for the technologically-advanced members here:

I have heard that it is very easy to copy a film from LaserDisc to vhs tape. My question, is it possible to record a LaserDisc onto a DVD (DVD-r I think its called)?

And if so, would the copy be of only the film or would one be able to copy the entire contents of one LaserDisc onto one DVD?

I only ask as I am interested in obtaining the Criterion LD of Othello on dvd instead of vhs and was wondering if that was possible.

Yes, assuming you have a standalone DVD-Recorder. It would be like hooking up the LD player to a VCR. If you have an LD player that switches sides automatically, you're really in business; otherwise you'll have to do that manually. It's really only a matter of time before we start seeing bootlegs of the various rare LD titles popping up on eBay (if they already haven't). One note: if you want commentaries, you'll have to re-record the movie a second time (or more, for multiple tracks).

The easiest....well i think it is easier....if you have any kind of editing equipment we are talking iMovie and up. You can easily hook up a LD player to any MiniDv or Digital 8 camera and copy the LD on some type of digial format and then import that onto a computer and burn with most any burning program, Nero, iDVD etc. If you really are tech savy and have a Mac I suggest editing on Final Cut Pro and burning with DVD Studio Pro. DSP is a professional grade program and you can create just about any kind of dvd feature on there. This means you can program the DVD so the commentary is on a seperate audio track and such. That is what I will start doing this summer when I begin porting all my LDs over to DVD. I really don't want to loose my LDs to the ravages of time.

Hi, gang:

Looking for whatever Welles goodies I don't already have. I'm not sure what exists and is tradable, but I'd love to get whatever's get-able for:

* FILMING OTHELLO
* FILMING THE TRIAL
* DON QUIXOTE
* THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND
* THE DEEP
* ORSON WELLES'S SKETCHBOOK
* THE ORSON WELLES STORY (preferably BBC version, but a cleaner copy than I have of the TNT edit would help if not)
* the Showtime version of ONE MAN BAND
* the documentary about restoring TOUCH OF EVIL - RESTORING EVIL? (aired on TV but bumped from the DVD, as I recall)

I have lots to trade. Most notably, I suppose, are DVD-R backups of several laserdiscs:

CITIZEN KANE (CAV Criterion anniversary edition)
MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS (CAV and CLV Criterion)
IT'S ALL TRUE
MACBETH (Republic Anniversary Edition)
OTHELLO (Criterion)
TOUCH OF EVIL (Universal preview version - not restoration)
THE TRIAL (Roan Group)
F FOR FAKE (Criterion)
WORKING WITH ORSON WELLES
SOMEONE TO LOVE

I also have very nice VHS copies of THE ORSON WELLES SHOW and the German version of ONE MAN BAND, plus tolerable VHS versions of other rarities like THE IMMORTAL STORY and others.

I'd prefer DVDs for what I'm seeking (and can make DVDs of my stuff), but VHS is doable/acceptable as well.

Shoot me an email and let's work out a trade.

Best,

These and more are available in a boot video entitled The Short Films of Orson Welles which shows up periodically on ebay.

Hello all,

If you haven't discovered this yet... there is a wealth of Orson films available for download to your PC through the peer-to-peer sharing utility "Emule". Most are excellent quality. Sure, it isn't going to be something you can put on the shelf, but for those who do not have these titles, or are having a hard time attaining the films, at least you can watch them on your computer. Here's what's available so far, in no particular order:

-- One Man Band (special extended edition)
-- Around the World With Orson Welles
-- Orson Welles Magic Show
-- Falstaff
-- Immortal Story
-- F For Fake
-- The Stranger
-- The Trial
-- Othello
-- Citizen Kane
-- Big Brass Ring (movie made based on Orson's script)
-- Working With Orson Welles
-- Touch Of Evil
-- Lady From Shanghai
-- Don Quixote
-- Night That Panicked America (movie about the radio broadcast of "War of the Worlds")
-- Macbeth
-- Hearts of Age
-- Journey Into Fear
-- Moby Dick
-- Mr. Arkadin
-- Magnificent Ambersons
-- Dominici Affair (German Language only)

Of course, all the widely available films are there, but what is worth noting are the rare ones:

There is a user who has been posting many of the rare movies and has been putting a lot of care into their transfers, as well as making sure each film is as complete as possible. The "One Man Band" is particularly interesting, because he has combined the footage from both released versions (there was footage from both versions that were not in one another) to make an edit that includes all the footage.

The "Magic Show" is a compilation of all available footage from the show.

"Night That Panicked America" is low quality, but amazing to see that it is available. I have never seen a release on video of this anywhere!

Disclaimer: I don't advocate the downloading of copyrighted material. I suggest purchasing films that are available. This list is posted for those who do not have access to these titles. Download at your own risk.

I know there will be more to come... have fun!

The Sketchbook series is only available through underground means, i.e. bootlegs. Orson's Bag was never finished, so it isn't available, except in clips in documentaries and such.

I read today in the NY Times that on the day he died, OW was on the Merv Griffin show and had told Griffin beforehand to ask him anything he liked, that he was feeling quite expansive. I would love to see that show. Anyone have any clues on how to get a copy?
