look, there are times when it seems like a chicken, but it's a duck. i don't know jaglom, i just had that one conversation with him. i asked his secretary about the welles tapes, and a cigar chomping mobster came to the phone. surprised the heck out of me, "you with a magazine? whara you wanna know? What about the tapes?" later i read the article where it said that they were taped without welles' knowledge, so at the risk of making an ASS out of U and ME, i ASSUMED it was true.

i don't know what type of day he was having. did his woman have sex with his best friend? did a deal fall through? was he being defensive about what graver was saying, not about what he did? i don't know. seems like a chicken but it could be a duck.

the conversation ended with jaglom agreeing to look at how i was going to use the transcripts to see if he would allow me to use them. later on these transcripts seemed out of tone for what i was doing and i never thought about him again.

anyway it's not worth all this arguing. he's got the tapes, i would love to hear them. the only downside is that if welles didn't know he was being taped he said a lot of stuff that we as fans don't really want to hear. in that aspect i agree with bogdanovich in his instantace in the TIOW tapes, that some of that stuff should not be published, and rosenbaum wanted every off color remark in there. we don't want to hear welles say so-and-so is a son of a bitch, and his films sucked."

.................

glennnnnn:
CAN SHE BAKE A CHERRY PIE isn't just bad, it made me want to find the filmmaker and cut his throat. that insipid version of the song playing over and over. IN A SAFE PLACE, BABY FEVER, VENICE VENICE, were all flat and boring. however, i did like SOME ONE TO LOVE.

i don't see any welles in jaglom, or his films. but i can't stand cassavetes' films either, and people who's opinion i respect love his work. cassavete's film HUSBANDS AND WIVES also made me feel like finding him and cutting his throat.

there is no accounting for taste, one man's treasure.....and all that.

i've always felt IFC and BRAVO love showing jaglom's films because they can get them real cheap.

interesting article. jaglom puts on film stuff no one cares about but him. films for the extremely bored. and i will refrain from commenting on the obvious.

Blunted: I'm overjoyed that you "refrain from commenting."

I try to practice that virtue.

However, "reportedly" is not a primary souce, nor is a Cinebook movie review.

Frank Brady reports at length on Welles' Memorial Service, including a paragraph on Jaglom's eulogy. A possible log on the old cannard, it's true, is Brady's discription of Oja Kodar's bitter, tearful attack, toward the end of the service, on "the presence in the audience of some of the very people, uninvited guests now mourning Orson, who wouldn't even lift a telephone receiver to help him when he was alive . . . 'dreary little selves whose fingers are still sticky from plucking at his wings' . . . [but Orson]would have forgiven those who plucked a feather or two in their threat to stop HIM from defying the force of gravity."

Maybe Blunted and others can make something of that, but really, there is Jaglom speaking at the Service! Did he fight his way to the lectern?

Possibly. In the World of Lore, anything is possible.

This is an important issue.
It is not a question of misunderstanding etc.

Someone is lying.

who is it?

glenn, again i'm not commenting on the tape controversy. the tape controversy is a beat topic for me now. i don't think there is much more left to say until we bring jaglom into a room and beat him with a rubber hose to get the truth.

and i never said jaglom wasn't a friend and didn't try to help welles. once again glenn is assigning to me what others said that pissed him off. but it's ok, that is why i come here - to hear from glenn.

i don't doubt jaglom tried to help welles, and was a friend.

i read in the andrew yule book on bogdanovich what it was like to help welles. bogdanovich is pulling for welles to get directing jobs and welles is pulling against him. welles was his own worst enemy. welles was suspicious, and always felt there was some one around the corner waiting to stab him in the back because of his experiences in hollywood in the 40s. now add that to his lack of people skills. his lack of mobility. his lack of being able to bend his vision to at least meet the producer half way, and you have an unemployed genius.

it's all very sad.

Yes, it's all very sad, but Blunted's image of dragging Jaglom into a room and beating him with a rubber hose to get the truth out of him gave me the best laugh I've had all week!

It is sad. I think I'll wait for the next revision here. I've had my say.

The rubber hose bit was clearly a gag, so let's not let things get out of hand here, okay, gang? Perhaps the Jaglom-Welles talk should cease?

sometimes i'm amazed at my ability to offend people without really trying.
