Just finished my last Gimlet of the evening after seeing what I think will be one of the best year end Oscar nominated movies: DOUBT, with Meryl Streep and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Ms. Streep gives the kind of performance that Oscars were made for. I cannot imagine anyone coming near her in winning the best actress trophy this year. The film itself raises many of the moral questions which are at the heart of Welles's TOUCH OF EVIL, namely do the ends justify the means. But in this case they are centered around questions pertaining to the Catholic Church and the possible indiscretions of a Priest. Cherry Jones, the brilliant actress who appeared in Tim Robbins's THE CRADLE WILL ROCK (as Hallie Flanagan), played the Meryl Streep part on the New York stage, and I'm sure she must have been fabulous, but Streep in the role is simply magnificent.

I then sat down to see this fabulous treasure trove of TIME-LIFE images Marco Shark has provided us a link for.

Interestingly, I'd have to say that many of the captions are probably quite inaccurate, although the pictures themselves are a joy to see.

One obviously example, is how Welles first daughter, Christopher Welles, is not even identified, except as "by a daughter from a previous marriage."

There is also a great shot of Anne Baxter dancing with Welles at Cannes, almost as if they were rehearsing the ballroom scene from THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS. And if the episode of Welles ripping Baxter's blouse off of her really did happen, it would appear Baxter didn't hold it against Welles, as she clearly is enjoying his company while dancing with him in Cannes.

According to the caption, this was at the 1953 Cannes festival, but it may also be mistaken, as Welles was in Cannes the previous year when OTHELLO won the Grand Prix there, and may (or may not) have been at Cannes the following year.

You would think that the combined resources of TIME-LIFE would still have enough money left in there office to hire some fact checkers who could look into these things...

I just came on to post the link to the Time Life photos on Google and found it already posted.

I enjoyed looking through the Welles collection and the others can certainly keep you busy for hours. I love those old magazines.
