Orson Welles Crater - NASA names Martian landmark

I don't know if this was on the board before, but it's certainly cool in my opinion. The only photo I've found so far is this detail of expansive dunes within the crater itself. Here's the link: I'll try to find out more

Cool. I had heard nothing about it, but it's a nice tribute.

It is kind of neat -- wonder if they had to get the daughter's release/approval for such an honor.
This kind of act could be taken in another way, but I'm sure the fine folks at NASA were thinking of OW's genius, his star presence and contribution to the arts...

No doubt their tip of the hat to WotW, but yeah, my first thought was "I wonder if Beatrice will sue them". They didn't use his image though, so they should be safe. Now if they ever offer trips there, and build a "Panic Broadcast" museum, that might be something else entirely... ;)

This NASA/ JPL observation captures collapsed blocks of material on floor of ORSON WELLES CRATER on Mars. Layers and the clay minerals found in this 125-kilometer crater are evidence that it once contained a lake.
