Kudos to Woodstock, Illinois, officials, who voted to dedicate the stage at the Woodstock Opera House in honor of Orson Welles.
The City Council agreed to the measure on Tuesday night. The Woodstock Opera House Advisory Commission recommended the dedication at its October 16 meeting.
The vote comes as Woodstock Celebrates readies to mark the 100th anniversary of Welles’ birth in 2015. You can follow their plans at their Facebook page.
The stage dedication is set for February, according to Kathleen Spaltro of Woodstock Celebrates.
The Woodstock Opera House was built in 1889 and soon became McHenry County’s center for entertainment – a tradition that continues today.
Under the direction of Roger Hill, headmaster of Woodstock’s Todd School for Boys, Shakespearean plays starring Orson Welles and Michael MacLiammoir were performed at the opera house during the summer of 1934.
