...Welles, speaking French, announces "Best Director" awards for fellow filmmakers Robert Bresson and Andrei Tarkovsky at Cannes in 1983. To see my two favorite directors (Welles & Tarkovsky) shaking hands is a real treat, but I suspect Welles would have found both Tarkovsky's and Bresson's films to be tedious. Tarkovsky was supposedly miffed that his NOSTALGHIA did not garner an award (beyond the "Best Director" honor he shared with Bresson); the jury awarded the "Grand Prix" to MONTY PYTHON'S MEANING OF LIFE that year!

Today, I completed the final classes for my Master's Degree and now I find this great treat!
Orson's beautiful voice speaking French = epic

Sadly, I don't have a reference for this, but a few years back I saw an interview on a Monty Python documentary which tallies with this:
Michael Palin explained that Monty Python's The Meaning of Life was up for the Grand Prix at Cannes in 1983, and the Pythons were TERRIFIED when they found out that Welles was chairing the panel of judges, since they were sure the "Mr. Creosote" scene was bound to offend him. In the event, the film won the prize. They guessed that even though Welles was chairing the judges, the film must have won in spite of him.
After the ceremony, Palin was again filled with a sense of dread when he bumped into Welles, who came up to him and said, "That Mr. Creosote scene...is one of the FUNNIEST things I've seen in my life!"
