He might have liked the idea of supplying his own ending. Welles adapted THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO for radio several times, but I'm not aware of any other Dumas novels that he sought to dramatize. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that.
There's an excellent novel by Guy Endore called KING OF PARIS, however, which concerns the rocky relationship between Alexander Dumas and his son, also a novelist, most famous for writing CAMILLE. According to Bret Wood's bio-bibliography, Welles wanted to make a film of Endore's novel, but couldn't. He did however, make a short, 30-minute essay film on the subject, called CAMILLE, THE NAKED LADY, AND THE MUSKETEERS, which is now believed lost. But of course, TOO MUCH JOHNSON was long believed lost too, so you never know.
