Welles credited with inspiring Prince's song 1999

Post by Terry »

“This one night we stopped at a place that had ‘Free HBO’ written outside. That sign made us all just crazy. We were so excited to watch cable for the first time. There was this Orson Welles film on, The Man Who Saw Tomorrow. It was about Nostradamus. He kept saying that Armageddon was coming in 1999. The next day, everybody was talking about this Orson Welles thing, like: ‘Did you see that?’ Prince just took out his little cassette and played us a demo he’d written. It was ‘1999’. While you’re just watching a show and processing the information, he’s watching it and being inspired.”

Looks can be deceiving

While the fellow in this photo (which I couldn't copy and paste by itself, so the article it's in follows) couldn't be more Welles's polar opposite politically if he tried, from the looks of him, if he ever looks to supplement his day job, he could probably make a few extra euros posing as Orson:

Re: Bob Random in Danger Zone III (1990)

Post by Wellesnet »

Random starred in II and III, opposite Jason ("Flesh Gordon") Williams. Here's IMDB's synopsis of the whole saga:

"Danger Zone" (1987)
Six girls are on their way to Las Vegas to sing in a TV competition, but when their car breaks down, their only choice is to walk to a town they see in the distance. Little do they know that this ghost town is the hideout of a gang of drug dealing bikers. The bikers hold the girls captive, and only one man can save them....

Danger Zone II (1989)
When Reaper, the leader of a murderous biker gang, is released from prison on a technicality, he swears revenge on Wade Olson, the undercover cop who put him there. And when Reaper swears revenge, everyone better take cover. But when the outlaw kidnaps Olson's girlfriend, Reaper's days are numbered. On this turf, every step you take could land you in the Dangerzone.

Danger Zone III (1990)
An outlaw-biker named Reaper battles an ex-lawman named Wade Olsen while searching the desert for a cache of gold buried by renegade Confederate soldiers.

Came across this in researching Orson's 1938 pinch-hit for Lionel...

To put it in plain Anglo-Saxon: what a LOAD the BBC story is!

Have a safe Thanksgiving,

Not sure how complete, but that article you had to run down in the stacks of a university library may be more accessible now.

Welles as Firearms User (NOT a political question)

Post by Al Schwartz »

Hello all, I am a new member here. First of all I'd like to thank everyone here and especially the people who maintain this site, because I have found it to be an excellent resource for my research about Welles.

To begin with, I have a very specific question or interest. Welles of course handled firearms in many of the movies he appeared in, most notably in Lady From Shanghai and The Third Man. I am trying to learn just how proficient he was with firearms in real life, and whether he ever owned any. Please understand that this is strictly a technical or biographical research question, and absolutely NOT a political question. I know there is a thread here about his opinions on firearms, but that is a different matter. Thanks in advance, I am very grateful for any information.

Patricia Medina on Schlitz Playhouse

Not at all what I expected, knowing only her portrayal as Mily in Mr. Arkadin.

Ah, she played the wicked lady in so many 50s buccaneer movies to say nothing of her role as Sister George's support in Aldrich's THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE.

S&S Poll coming in July 2022?

Post by Wellesnet »

PSA: Don’t Politicize This Year’s Sight and Sound Poll:
https://www.worldofreel.com/blog/2022/2 ... feafovi5pc
2012 was the biggest ever expansion of the Sight and Sound voter pool, by both diversity and sheer numbers, and in the next two polls I think we can expect that trend to continue in ways that both disrupt and bring a little more color and gender to the final results. This could also, sadly, mean younger voters who just haven’t seen enough of films history to be a part of such a prestigious poll and would, say, include “The Shawshank Redemption” or “The Dark Knight” on their ballots
