Giving a Welles presentation in Port Huron, MI 10/28/15

Post by cartergold »

Good afternoon, everyone! Long time lurker but first time posting. Hope it is okay to plug something of this of my own here.

I have an Orson Welles presentation that I am about to give at one of the colleges that I teach at. It is called "Brevity is the soul: Evaluating Orson Welles' commercials and voice-overs." I gave another version of this presentation at Indiana University back in May for their Welles symposium but I have seriously expanded upon it since then. The presentation itself is about how the television commercials and voice-overs Welles did toward the end of his life should actually be viewed as an integral part of his body of work as opposed to being orphaned from it. I also go over how I think the commercial work was going to have an effect on his own personal works, especially for the attempted King Lear film.

Colleagues of mine at where I teach (St. Clair County Community College, Port Huron, MI) enjoyed the paper that I wrote and encouraged me to bring the talk to campus. Just thought I'd see if there might be anyone from the boards who might be able to make it out.

I have delved into more of the papers available at the University of Michigan special collections and gotten more information on what I presented. Additionally, over the past few months I have been speaking with a lot of the people who worked with Welles during his time as the Paul Masson spokesman. I have been gathering a lot of really interesting information and I am starting to get a complete view of what happened on the day they were working on the champagne spot (the outtakes of which I have to believe you're all familiar with). So this presentation will be an expanded version of what I presented a few months ago at IU along with some of the newer things I have been gathering (and possibly go into details of the drunk outtakes if time permits).

The presentation will take place on October 28, 2015 at 6 pm in room 312 of the Main Building at St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron, MI. Here is a campus map: http://www.sc4.edu/uploadedFiles/Websit ... %20PDF.pdf

Sorry if this is too shameless of a plug. Just thought I'd give it a whirl.

No, it is not a shameful plug but something really important and new. Good luck with your presentation and I hope you find a venue for publication. Coincidentally, TIME OUT (UK) did a short piece on Welles's Masson commercials suggesting that they also belonged to his oeuvre. This was sometime in the early to mid-1970s.
