Robert Carringer R.I.P

Post by tonyw »

I've just heard from a friend who used to work at the University of Illinois that Robert Carringer has passed away. We all owe him an immense debt especially in countering the inaccurate claims of Pauline Kael. Danny Wu told me two months ago that he was not in good health.

Thanks, Tony. His Ambersons book was a great contribution to Welles scholarship as well.

I hope he did manage to complete this third book and that his literary executors ensure that it will eventually receive publication.

His work actively changed my life and provided decades of rewarding analysis. Farewell.

RIP, a great Welles scholar. From what I've heard, Mr. Carringer actually passed away several WEEKS ago, but there's been absolute zilch about it online.

Yes, I only heard about it myself on Friday - and then by accident. I've written elsewhere that there is a growing tendency on the part of certain journal editors and a younger generation of "scholars" to dismiss past achievements and focus on the present. That is why Tarantino is a fan of Pauline Kael and makes the films he does.

My understanding is he passed away three weeks ago and requested no memorial service.
I had mixed feelings about posting an obituary, but in the end to ignore his passing felt wrong.

You made the right decision, Ray. Although he may have wanted anonymity for his passing, the contribution he made to Welles scholarship is pioneering, especially in demolishing the Kael thesis that sadly still remains with the uninformed. When my University (Dis) Honors program asked me to meet her in my first year within my new "heart of darkness" I refused. Her denigration of Welles and bitchy reviews often attacking Susan Clark resulted in her gaining that false celebrity status.
