Orson on Liberace Christmas Special

Post by tony »

Here's John Candy as Orson Welles and Dave Thomas as Lee Liberace, the former reading a Christmas story accompanied by the latter on piano. The words Candy speaks are taken verbatim from the frozen peas commercial outtakes, and it's a wonderful little comedy routine that you might not have seen before:

Good video you linked to, but that's Billy Crystal, not Liberace.

Orson on Liberace Christmas Special

Thanks Craig, that's even funnier than the Billy Crystal excerpt. John Candy nails it again as OW, and pairing Welles with the flamboyant kitsch queen Liberace seems to speak for itself, somehow. Those infamous radio outtakes from 1970 ("You people are such pests!") came back to haunt Welles for the rest of his life.

Thanks, Craig, for posting the correct URL for the Lee Liberace special featuring Welles, even though Candy as Welles is featured in the video I posted the URL to as well.
Here's a third video of Candy as Welles, this time a documentary with OW investigating the philosophy of comedy. Candy plays it absolutely straight, as usual for his turns as Welles, and I can see Welles approaching comedy in the same way. Eugene Levy as Bobby Bittman and Andrea Martin are, as always, hilarious.
