The Trial 4K UHD Criterion

Post by Le Chiffre »

TCM is currently streaming the Studio Canal version (in HD with French opening titles)...I can't remember whether I've seen this transfer before. But I watched about 30 minutes of this last night, and the print and transfer are terrific.
I watched that about a month ago too and thought it was very high quality. I think Criterion would be hard pressed to better it, but I look forward to seeing their UHD version for myself.

The new version looks inviting so much so that I may end my last semester in this infamous institution by running a Welles class 40 years after he left us and io years during his 50th anniversary ignored by "The Big Mediocre Film Festival" on this campus. Numbers may be low but I might be spared some of the Hitchcock first papers I'm grading that makes the process injurious to one's mental health!
Speaking of Tony Curtis i have the Laser Light dvd of Mr. Arkadin and i like his into to the film wearing black gloves which i thought was very funny.

I received my Criterion disc and did a a/b comparison to the StudioCanal UK 4k release and happy to report that the Criterion release has a lighter looking image and not the crushed blacks that i viewed on the UK release. Will watch it soon and listen to the commentary by Joseph McBride.

The Trial 4K UHD Criterion

Picked it up from B&N yesterday, 50% off. The UHD looks great, and a wonderful commentary from Joe McBride. FILMING THE TRIAL looks very good too, presented as a Munich Film Museum release. I believe this is a longer version of it than I've seen before, with questions for Welles that I'd never heard. I also like the way they incorporate part of the missing computer scene into it, with subtitles. Good idea.

The 1972 lunch program with Moreau has a lot of interesting tidbits in it as well, such as Welles citing Howard Hughes as one of the models for Jake Hannaford, and the two of them discussing Moreau's participation in the film (presumably as Sarah Valeska). This was right around the time he was also making Hughes an integral part of F FOR FAKE.

Sounds great. I'm looking forward to seeing 'Filming the Trial' and if the deleted scene is also incorporated, I guess that explains why it wasn't included as a separate extra. Good to know it's on there after all.

I should say part of the computer scene is incorporated into FtT, and Welles' answer to a question sets it up nicely. Another part of the computer scene is in one of the other extras. Yes, I would have preferred the whole scene as a separate extra, but at least they did something with it.

Just rewatched The Trial with McBride's commentary. Phenomenal. I wish I could see it in the theater again. The Music Box FTW.
Message me for a copy of Hopper/Welles (2020). Don't let this film go to waste.

Yes, Joe does a good commentary. I notice that FILIMING THE TRIAL has been re-edited by the Munich people so it includes the Katina Paxinou footage. Fun to see young Joe in the audience once he identifies himself in the a.c. and David Ehrenstein asks a good question which Orson appreciates.
